Answers to your questions
Questions? We have answers! Here are your most frequent questions regarding open enrollment.
Q: When is open enrollment?
A: We will contact you via email when your company's open enrollment begins. All enrollments or changes are effective October 1*, regardless of when the enrollment is received. Please note, your company may not offer all of the benefits listed here. Log into your account to learn more about your specific benefit offering.
If you need to make changes after your enrollment period ends, our benefits team is available to help! Also, check your benefit deductions on your first paycheck in October. Report any corrections to Nextep immediately.
Changes during open enrollment will be effective on October 1, but note that your health plan still runs on a calendar year. Your deductible and coinsurance, for example, will reset January 1.
You may contact Nextep's benefits team online, by email at benefits@nextep.com, or by phone at 888-811-5150 with any questions or concerns about the enrollment process. You may also contact Nextep health assist with questions about your plans.

Q: What about other plans?
A: We have additional plans on different enrollment schedules:
- Employee assistance program (EAP): Your benefits-eligible employees have instant, free access to Nextep's EAP if your company offers one of Nextep's medical plans.
- Flexible spending account (FSA): FSA annual enrollment is at the end of the year with a January 1 start date*.
- Health savings account (HSA): You may change HSA deductions at any time. Open enrollment is at year-end.
- Retirement accounts: Once eligible, you may enroll or change your 401(k) at the first of each month. Exception: You may change contributions to 0% at any time.
- Voluntary benefits: You may enroll or change these benefits on a month-to-month basis: pet, legal, and ID theft protection.
Q: Am I eligible?
A: Contact your supervisor for information on your company's eligibility. Receiving benefit information does not guarantee eligibility. Your dependents may also be eligible, including your spouse, domestic partner, and children up to age 26.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: The costs for each type of coverage can be found on your company's benefits cost sheet or in the online running calculator when you're enrolling in your benefits.
Benefit costs may or may not reflect your employer's contribution.
Q: When is my next opportunity to enroll?
A: There are several periods during which you can enroll or make changes to your benefits:
- Open enrollment: If you miss online open enrollment, your next opportunity will be next year's open enrollment. Nextep's open enrollment period is generally held each year in August, with an effective date of October 1.
- New hires: If you are a newly-eligible employee, you must submit benefit enrollments within 30 days of your eligibility date. Your next opportunity to make changes is during open enrollment.
- Qualifying event: You may also make changes that align with a qualifying event, such as the birth of a child, marriage, divorce, or job loss. Changes must be made within 30 days of the qualifying event.
- Note: A qualifying event allows an employee to enroll or change coverage levels within a plan. It does not allow an employee to switch plans or to make a change that is inconsistent with the qualifying event.
- Also note that some voluntary benefits, such as pet insurance and lifestyle benefits, are available to enroll or cancel at any time on a month-to-month basis.
Q: Tell me more about lifestyle benefits.
A: Lifestyle benefits offer access to a number of perks, including:
- Savings on dining and everyday items
- Hotel discounts
- Roadside assistance
- Auto repair discounts
- Veterinarian 25% discount with Pet Assure
- Legal access
- ID theft resolution
- Fitness center savings
The lifestyle program is available to all employees on day one of employment, whether full-time, part-time, or enrolled in any other benefits. You can add or drop coverage at any time, and you'll pay the monthly benefit cost directly to the carrier rather through paycheck deduction.
