Nextep's legal benefits give you easy access to attorneys for a wide variety of personal legal services. It's like having your own attorney on retainer. Payments are made conveniently through payroll deduction.

Legal issues arise when you get married, have a baby, prepare a will, buy or sell your home, or lose a spouse or a parent. When you use a network attorney for covered services, all attorney fees are covered by the legal plan. Advice and consultations on an unlimited number of personal legal matters are included.

How the Legal Plan Works

  1. Choose an in-network attorney, available online or at 800.821.6400. You can also choose an attorney outside of the network and be reimbursed according to a fee schedule.
  2. The legal plan will give you an assigned case number to share with your attorney when you make an appointment. No claims form needed.
  3. Speak to your attorney face to face, by phone at 800.821.6400, or submit questions online. Network Attorneys are there for you, whenever you need advice on any personal legal matter or representation on a number of legal services covered under your plan.

Yes! Call 800.821.6400 for assistance in finding right attorney, tailored to your specific legal matter.

The plan only selects attorneys who meet their selection criteria and agree to their Attorney Code of Excellence. Attorneys in the network have an average of 25 years’ experience in the practice of law, have graduated from an accredited law school, and must maintain valid state licensure. The plan routinely monitors their attorneys to ensure excellence.

Yes, you can use any attorney you’d like. If you choose an attorney outside of the plan's network, they’ll reimburse you for services based on a set fee reimbursement schedule.

Yes, you have unlimited use of the plan for covered legal matters.

Yes! Your spouse and dependent children are covered under the plan.

No claim forms needed! When you use a Network Attorney, there is nothing for you to do. Plan services are covered in full, and billing is between the plan and the Network Attorney. There are no waiting periods, no copays, no deductibles and no claims forms.

"Fully-covered" means all attorney services related to the covered matter are paid by the plan when you use a network attorney. There are no co-pays, deductibles, or claim forms.

Pre-existing matters are also covered; use the plan to resolve as many legal issues as possible. The only pre-existing matters not covered are those for which you retained an attorney before becoming eligible for the plan. This protects your existing attorney-client relationship.

Since your coverage will be verified by your attorney, you will not need an ID card for Legal insurance.

If you need service for a matter outside the scope of the plan, you can still receive telephone advice or an office consultation, as long as it is not excluded.

This lets you discuss the issue at length, understand your rights and options, and decide on a course of action.

After the consultation, the attorney may decide that the matter is actually covered by the plan. If it is, the attorney will advise you and provide the service. If the matter is not covered, the attorney will provide a written fee estimate and you can choose whether to retain the attorney for further representation.

Here are some examples of legal matters that are not covered:
  • Employment-related matters, including company benefits
  • Issues involving the employer, plan attorneys, MetLife, Hyatt Legal, & affiliates
  • Patent, trademark, and copyright
  • Costs and fines
  • Appeals and class actions
  • Matters in which there is a conflict of interest between the employee and spouse or dependents, in which case services are excluded for the spouse and dependents
  • Farm and business matters, including rental issues when the plan member is the landlord
  • Frivolous or unethical matters
  • Services with a pre-existing attorney-client relationship prior to the plan
